The article analyzes the Sarau Gente de Palavra Paulistano, understanding it as a contemporary manifestation of the long-standing tradition of literary gatherings, a historical space of convergence between literature, performance, and political engagement. The study undertakes a conceptual review that connects nineteenth-century bourgeois soirées and the aoidoi of Ancient Greece to contemporary peripheral literary gatherings, demonstrating the persistence of a model of literary circulation grounded in networks of affect and orality. The analysis focuses on the collective’s functioning as a “machinery of the other,” a concept that highlights the dynamics of face-to-face encounters and makes it possible to understand how the writing process is constituted through an experience of presence and interaction. To this end, it demonstrates that recitation and performance transform the written word into a relational and affective act that strengthens community bonds and reaffirms the poet’s social role. The conclusion underscores the importance of the literary gathering as a crucial device for experiencing and renewing literature as a collective and politically situated practice within the contemporary Brazilian cultural scene.
