The objective was to report the stages of structuring and pilot implementation of a matrix support and screening program for early detection of oral cancer in the State of Goiás. The structuring of the program was multi-institutional and involved the stages of conception/design and pilot implementation. The pilot strategies included training 56 dental surgeons from the Unified Health System (SUS), health education focused on preventing oral cancer and screening 1,462 individuals from the target population in the state capital. Organized and opportunistic screening identified 44 individuals with suspicious injuries; 4 had potentially malignant lesions and two had histologically confirmed malignant lesions. Opportunistic screening was more applicable in terms of logistics and should be carried out continuously in primary health care. Matrix support played an important role in referring patients to secondary care. The program, based on scientific evidence, constitutes a health technology for early detection of oral cancer with potential for implementation in other SUS scenarios.
