Topical nanoemulsion of cannabidiol and quercetin on inflammation and skin barrier in experimental atopic dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by epidermal barrier dysfunction and dysregulated immune responses. This study developed and evaluated a topical nanoemulsion containing cannabidiol (CBD) and quercetin (QU) in Pentravan® using an experimental rat model. Twenty-eight Wistar rats were allocated into four groups (n=7): Pentravan® (GI), Pentravan® + 1% CBD (GII), Pentravan® + 1% QU (GIII), and Pentravan® + 1% CBD + 1% QU (GIV). Formulations were characterized by particle size, polydispersity index, and zeta potential. Efficacy was assessed by clinical-dermatological examination, adapted SCORAD, thermography, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and histopathological analysis over four weeks. The CBD+QU group showed more pronounced reduction of inflammatory parameters, lower dermal infiltrate, spongiosis, and exocytosis compared to isolated treatments. The topical association of CBD and QU in Pentravan® nanoemulsion showed therapeutic potential for experimental atopic dermatitis.
