In this article, we propose an interpretive reading of the wisdom of innocence in two philosophical autobiographies: Michel de Montaigne’s Essays and Friedrich Nietzsche’s Ecce Homo. In the chapters “On Repentance” and “Why I Am So Intelligent,” the philosophers show oppositions to Christian notions of guilt and remorse, offering their justifications for a defense of innocence. Thus, we will distinguish the similarities and differences between Montaigne’s sagesse of a self-satisfied rational conscience and Nietzsche’s sagesse of cultivating unconscious and necessary impulses.
