Abstract

The Armed Forces, historically characterized by their predominantly male composition, have promoted the inclusion of women as part of efforts aimed at gender equity. In Brazil, Temporary Voluntary Military Service (TVMS) has stood out as a mechanism to increase female participation in the Brazilian Army (BA). Our goal was to understand, from the perspectives of women who joined the TVMS in the BA, how their transition from a civilian to a military career is configured. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach, with semi-structured interviews conducted with 10 women who made the career transition to military service in the BA. Most of the women interviewed reported making the career transition from the civilian sector to military service in order to redefine their professional path, seeking better financial conditions, less stress, and more time for their family. Despite a strong desire to join the military class, they faced challenges in adapting to the military culture, such as difficulties in aligning their expectations with reality, impacting their interpersonal relationships and mental health. However, some highlighted a positive redefinition, especially due to the appreciation and new opportunities that the transition provided. The military career also imposed changes in work dynamics, with an impact on professional autonomy and adjustment to the rigid hierarchy. The transition was also marked by emotional challenges, such as anxiety and apprehension, and by a process of rebuilding the professional and personal identity of these women.
