Abstract

The article analyzes platform labor and the transformations it promotes in processes of informality. Based on empirical research conducted with domestic workers, software developers, and delivery workers, we argue that platform labor modifies the characteristics of Brazilian informality by renewing practices of exploitation and domination. This movement gives rise to the newest informality, which updates the features of the new informality and is marked by the centrality of informal workers within companies, the erosion of stable forms of productive organization, the more detailed control of production, and the consolidation of an entrepreneurial–immediatist way of life. The empirical research involved interviews with 18 workers and netnography on the websites of platform-based companies.
