Abstract

This article analyzes the artistic research strategies applied in a doctorate focused on the interpretation of Flausino
Valle's works for solo violin. The research was structured in cycles of data collection, video recording, and reflective diary,
culminating in the proposition of the "Artistic Reflective Double-Checking Cycle" (CARDC) methodology. The study details nine
"criteria/questions/strategies to be observed" related to fingerings, bowings, technical difficulties, dynamics, onomatopoeic
effects, tempo, gestures, use of recording, and sonorities. Through the analysis of the "making reflecting" process and specific
examples from Valle's Preludes, the article demonstrates how each criterion contributed to the construction of the
interpretation. The research validates Artistic Practice as Research (PaR) and emphasizes the role of self-reflection and video
recording in artistic development.

Author Biography

Leonardo Vieira Feichas, University of Brasília

Ph.D. in Musical Arts from Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL – Portugal) and Ph.D. in Music from Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), through an international co-tutelle program. His doctoral dissertation was nominated for the CAPES Award, and he received a commendation from Universidade Nova de Lisboa. In 2009, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance from UNICAMP, and in 2013, he completed his Master’s degree in Performance Practices at the same university. As an Assistant Professor of Higher Education, he taught from 2014 to 2024 in the Music Program at the Federal University of Acre (UFAC). In 2016, he was awarded the Escola de Formação (ESFOR) grant from UFAC, served as Artist-in-Residence at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), and published the book “Da Porteira da Fazenda ao Batuque Mineiro: o Violino Brasileiro de Flausino Valle.” He is currently a faculty member in the Department of Music at the University of Brasília (UnB) and a permanent member of the Graduate Program in Music (PPGMUS–UnB). Since 2017, he has participated in the Starling DeLay Symposium on Violin Studies at The Juilliard School in New York. As a violinist, he maintains an active performance career across Europe and the Americas, performing as an orchestral musician, soloist, and chamber player in instrumental ensembles such as violin–guitar and violin–piano duos, alongside Dr. Bruno Madeira and Dr. Marcelo Brum. He served as guest concertmaster of the contemporary music group at the Lisbon College of Music (Ensemble Cluster LAB XL) in 2017 and 2018, performing in various Portuguese palaces and theaters. As a researcher, his main area of investigation focuses on the Brazilian violin repertoire—particularly the works of Flausino Valle (1894–1954)—as well as on performance studies and the field of Artistic Research methodology. One of the outcomes of his doctoral studies was the development of the methodology titled “Artistic-Reflective Double-Check Cycle (CARDC).” Based on this proposal, and through a partnership/project (PROEXT PG – CAPES) between the Aeronautics Institute of Technology (ITA) and UnB, an application is being developed for creative research based on an Artificial Intelligence–assisted double-check cycle, designed for free use in research and education. Since 2017, he has conceived and co-organized, together with Professors Dr. Liu Man Ying (UFC) and Dr. Dora Utermohl (UFC), the “Flausino Valle String Meeting / National Flausino Valle Conference,” an annual artistic and academic event that has held seven editions at different Brazilian universities across the North, Northeast, South, and Southeast regions. In 2023, he released his edited versions of Valle’s Preludes as a free e-book through UNICAMP, achieving record download numbers. He is a researcher with the String Instrument Performance Studies Group (GEPInC – UNICAMP), the Artistic Research Observatory (OLPA), and the Music and Interpretation Group (UNL).
