Introduction: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a health problem in Cuba and worldwide. The triglyceride/glucose index (TyG) is highly useful and has been validated as an indicator of insulin resistance in individuals with dysglycemia.
Objective: To analyze the behavior of this phenomenon in a Cuban study involving 2,000 patients, applying ATP III criteria and the TyG index ≥ 8.5.
Methods: An observational, cross-sectional, and analytical study was conducted among individuals who received medical care at the primary health care level in Cuba. ATP III criteria and the TyG index with a cutoff value of ≥ 8.5 were applied. HDL values were estimated through mathematical equations. Analyses were stratified by sex.
Results: It was demonstrated that the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was higher when using the TyG index ≥ 8.5, which allowed the identification of differences between men and women.
Conclusions: The cohort cutoff point of the TyG index ≥ 8.5 was considered a reliable support tool, even in the initial stages, and represents a low-cost, easily applicable study.
