ABSTRACT: Dialectal studies in Brazil, particularly those grounded in geolinguistics, have undergone a significant qualitative and quantitative advance over the past 25 years, providing empirical evidence for assessing the extent to which Nascentes’s (1953) proposal for the country’s dialectal division still holds. It is known that Nascentes essentially envisioned this division based on the realization of pretonic mid vowels. In this article, in order to revisit that division using more recent data and focusing on a different phonetic aspect — the /r/ in syllable coda position — we first review a set of studies carried out across all Brazilian administrative regions and then select as our corpus the ALiB phonetic maps that examine rhotics in internal and external coda positions as collected in the state capitals. Accordingly, the objectives of this article are: (i) to discuss, in light of Pluridimensional Dialectology, Nascentes’s (1953) proposal for the dialectal division of Brazilian Portuguese, and (ii) to compare that division with the data provided by the Linguistic Atlas of Brazil (Cardoso et al., 2014), specifically the phonetic maps that represent the areal distribution of rhotics.
