Dialectal studies in Brazil, more specifically geolinguistic studies, have made significant qualitative and quantitative advances over the past 25 years, providing empirical evidence of the extent to which Nascentes’ proposal for dialectal division still holds. It is known that this possibility of division was basically conceived on the basis of the realization of pretonic mid vowels. In this study, in order to revisit this division using more recent data and another phonetic feature, /r/ in syllable coda position, we first provide an overview of studies conducted in all administrative regions of Brazil and, subsequently, select as our corpus the phonetic maps of the Linguistic Atlas of Brazil (ALiB) dealing with rhotics in word-internal and word-final codas, based on data collected in the capitals. Thus, the objectives of this article are (i) to discuss, in light of Pluridimensional Dialectology, Nascentes’ proposal for the dialectal division of Portuguese spoken in Brazil and (ii) to compare this division with the data obtained by ALiB regarding the phonetic maps that address the areal distribution of rhotics.
