Abstract

This article presents an account of an outreach experience carried out by undergraduate Physics students at Unicamp with senior high school students. The project focused on teaching concepts of modern physics—especially elementary particles—through three sessions: (1) a discussion of the relationship between the periodic table and elementary particles, addressing how we infer properties of invisible structures; (2) a deepening of how we obtain experimental information about the Standard Model of Particle Physics and an introduction to the Brazilian particle accelerator Sirius; (3) the application of a board game created by the undergraduates to review the content and foster engagement among the high school students. The paper discusses the formative role of outreach, as well as the relevance of the topic for motivating and engaging high school students. The results highlight the importance of initiatives like this for the curricularization of extension, innovatively integrating teaching, research, and outreach. It is hoped that the project presented here can be replicated and expanded, given its potential to open new possibilities in science education and outreach.
