This article aims to understand the emergence of Professional Doctorates (PDs) in the Anglophone world and their international expansion. Methodologically, it is an exploratory analysis resulting in an analytical-descriptive study within the field of comparative education. Although PDs originated in the Anglo-Saxon context, their expansion remains limited in Latin America, Africa, and the Iberian Peninsula, while significant growth has been observed in several Asian countries. In Europe, PDs face diverse contexts, encountering resistance while seeking to balance tradition and innovation. With their global expansion, these programs have been classified as “in-service” doctorates, awarding the doctoral degree with an emphasis on professional development aimed at enhancing competencies related to professional practice.
