The text addresses the discursive formation surrounding Brazilian public higher education on digital social media and its effects within the current socio-educational context. Drawing on Bauman’s (1999) concept of "liquid modernity," it proposes the notion of "gaseous contemporaneity," characterized by the fluidity, volatility, and mutability of social and educational relationships mediated by digital technologies, algorithms, and artificial intelligence. Based on qualitative research (Creswell, 2010) and grounded in Charaudeau’s (2008) discourse analysis, the study examines a corpus of statements and debates on social networks about public universities, identifying three discursive groupings: the media, the neoliberal subject, and the university itself. The results point to three main trends: the inclusive, who value the university’s social role and inclusion; the privatists, who emphasize efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness; and the conservatives, who defend traditional values and resist inclusive agendas. Social media fosters the dispersion of information and identities, intensifying dynamics of disinformation and control.
