Abstract

Basic first aid skills are essential knowledge for society, as they can determine not only the victim's survival, but also the severity of sequelae and possible complications. In hospital settings, where the risk of critical events occurs constantly, the demand for quick and effective responses becomes even more evident. Although healthcare professionals are the most qualified to act in these moments, other employees may be the first to witness emergency situations. Thus, this study aims to assess whether realistic first aid simulation improves the knowledge and practical skills of employees in a small hospital. This is a quasi-experimental, non-randomized, before-and-after study that measures the occurrence of an outcome before and again after the implementation of first aid training. The sample for this study consisted of 28 employees, with a predominance of female participants between the ages of 40 and 50. There was a statistically significant increase (p ≤ 0.05) in most responses after training, with emphasis on Accident/collision, Abdominal evisceration, Unconscious victim, and Upper airway obstruction. Data analysis revealed an increase in participants' performance after the educational intervention. These results reinforce the potential of simulation to promote not only the improvement of theoretical knowledge but also the development of practical skills essential for rapid and safe response to emergency situations. In this sense, the present study contributes to the strengthening of innovative pedagogical practices in the health field, aligned with contemporary demands for patient safety and quality of care.
