Objectives: To synthesize the key aspects of nursing on which some discourses that determine its development are based. Methods: A two-stage search strategy was designed, first specific database searches were carried out, focusing on nursing literature. Subsequently, we identified and tracked studies that addressed the objective of this review. The techniques used were citation tracking, searching for subsequent publications, and using reference lists to work in reverse. Results: 31 texts were analyzed and categorized into four dimensions: professional autonomy, patriarchal gender issues, the Nightingale school and curricular reforms. Conclusions: The aspects synthesized in this review – through the principles they promulgate or their hidden discourses – have sought the professional and disciplinary development of nursing, or, on the contrary, do not allow nursing to be socially recognized as a professional discipline.
