Breastfeeding is widely recognized as essential for the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development of children and adolescents. However, many individuals do not have access to adequate breastfeeding, resulting in significant consequences in these areas. This integrative review aims to identify and analyze the psychosocial impacts on children or adolescents who did not receive adequate breastfeeding. The analysis included 20 articles from the Scopus, Web of Science, and BVS (Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde) databases that address the effects of the absence of breastfeeding in areas such as cognition, behavior, and emotional health. These articles were selected based on the PICo strategy, in which P refers to patient/population (children or teenagers), I to the phenomenon of interest (psychosocial impacts), and Co to the context (absence of adequate breastfeeding). The results indicate that inadequate breastfeeding is potentially associated with greater risks of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional problems. However, it cannot be concluded that it significantly impacts the psychological well-being and/or social interactions of children or adolescents.
