This research determines the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic performance of students at a university in Ecuador to provide recommendations that contribute to the strengthening of empathic and social skills and favor the control and progress of positive personal, academic and educational relationships. The study's methodological approach is quantitative, through a non-experimental, transactional, correlational, and causal design. The total number of participating subjects was 100 students, and the sample selection was intentional under the non-probabilistic type of sampling. The survey technique was used for data collection, and the questionnaire was used as an instrument, which presented internal validity, with a Cronbach's Alpha value of 0.879, and external validity determined by the judgment of three experts in the study area. The findings made it possible to establish the relationship between the variables of emotional intelligence and academic performance. A statistically proportional effect was found between emotional intelligence and academic performance.
