Characteristics of intimate partner violence in Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil, from 2009-2018

Abstract

Objective: to analyze intimate partner violence (IPV) in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, with emphasis on physical violence. Methods: cross-sectional study, with correspondence analysis (MCA) of records in Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação, between 2009 and 2018. Results: from the 9,950 notifications registered, 91.8% were of physical violence; higher rates found in young female (189.2/100,000), who studied until high school (139.6/100,000), with a partner (202.7/100,000), indigenous people (488.8/100,000), and residents on the border with other countries (223,1/100.000); the aggressors were mostly current partners (76.9%) and men (95.5%); about physical violence, MCA revealed predominance on weekends, at night, with the use of body strength and the aggressor under the influence of alcohol; however, more occurred outside of their houses, committed by current partners, and did not constitute repeat events. Conclusion: highlight for young victims, with a partner, low education, indigenous women and significant occurrence in the border region.
