Description of drugs prescribed for hormonal therapy in specialized health services for transsexual and transvestite people in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, 2020

Objective: To describe the drugs prescribed for the hormonal treatment in health establishments providing specialized care for transsexuals and transvestites in Rio Grande
do Sul, Brazil. Methods: Descriptive study, with data collection in the establishments, between May and September 2020, using the instrument developed by the researchers. Results: The survey covered all seven state services. For transgender women and transvestites, antiandrogen drugs and spironolactone were prescribed in all services. With the exception of one establishment, the others prescribed cyproterone. All health establishments prescribed estrogen-based drugs with differences in the route of administration. For transgender men, all prescribed androgens intramuscularly. Conclusion: The research points out the diversity of prescribed drugs, ratifying the need to produce information for the implementation of equity policies in the Brazilian Health System.
