Objective: This research aimed to investigate the impacts of the pandemic context on the health and burden of caregivers of people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during the period of social distancing.
Method: This is a qualitative study, carried out through 20 semi-structured interviews with caregivers of people with ASD, linked to the Association of Families and Friends of People with Autism and the Center for Psychosocial Care for Children and Adolescents, in Imperatriz/MA. The data were submitted to thematic content analysis.
Results: The results showed that the Covid-19 pandemic caused significant changes in the routine, with the intensification of hygiene care to avoid contagion and changes in the school and therapeutic routine, which increased the responsibility of caregivers. Regarding the care process, there was little or no family support, and the mothers were responsible for this task. The burden hindered self-care, resulting in the physical and mental illness of the caregivers, with a diagnosis of depression, anxiety and panic disorder.
Final Considerations: It is concluded that there is an emerging need for public policies aimed at caregivers and the awareness of family members and the community in general, regarding the necessary support in this process.
