Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on the health of caregivers of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), during the period of social distancing. This is a qualitative study, carried out through semi-structured interviews, with 20 caregivers of people with ASD, linked to the Association of Families and Friends of People with Autism and the Children and Youth Psychosocial Care Center, in Imperatriz/MA. Data were subjected to content analysis in the Minayo thematic modality. The results show that the Covid-19 pandemic caused significant changes in the caregivers' routine, with the intensification of hygiene care to avoid contagion and changes in the school and therapeutic routine, which increased responsibility. As for the care process, there is little or no family support, and this task falls to the mothers. The burden makes self-care difficult, resulting in the caregivers becoming physically and mentally ill, with a diagnosis of depression, anxiety and panic disorder. It is concluded that there is an emerging need for public policies aimed at caregivers and at raising awareness among family members and the community in general, regarding the necessary support in this process.
