Recommender systems are tools focused on helping users to get the information that best fits their preferences and needs in a search space overloaded with possible alternatives. In addition, group recommender systems are centered on suggesting certain kind of items that tends to be consumed in groups. The current research work is focused on performing an analysis of the use of group recommender systems as an innovative tool in the tourism area, which is one of the most relevant application areas in recommender systems. Specifically, it is performed a study of the most recent research works in this area, doing a comparison among them according to kind of study, kind of evaluation, application scenario, strengths, weaknesses, and country. This comparison leads to the projection of future research lines such as the development of new algorithms and methodologies that concludes with an extensive experimental study that assures the appropriate reuse of the proposed methods.
