This article analyzes the development of the national biomethane market and its contribution to Brazil’s energy sovereignty, highlighting the country’s potential in the context of the global energy transition. The study contextualizes the growth of biomethane at the international level, considering experiences from the European Union, the United States, and Asia, and examines its role in energy security. In the Brazilian context, it discusses the potential of biomethane from agricultural, urban, and livestock waste, assessing public policies, regulations, and business initiatives, as well as identifying barriers and opportunities for expansion. Finally, it presents growth prospects for the domestic market, contributions to strategic sectors, and Brazil’s international positioning as a leader in renewable energy, reinforcing the role of biomethane as a driver of sustainability and a pillar of national energy sovereignty.
